Here's what each section means:

K-3: Anyone from Kindergarten to 3rd grade may enter this section. (4th through 12th graders may not enter this section.)

K-5: Anyone from Kindergarten to 5th grade may enter this section. The players tend to be stronger than the average K-3 player, and they also tend to be in 4th or 5th grade. (6th through 12th graders may not enter this section.)

K-12 U1000: Anyone from Kindergarten to 12th grade may enter this section if their rating is under 1000 or if they are unrated. The players tend to be in 6th through 12th grades. (Kindergarteners through 12th graders that are rated over 1000 may not enter this section.)

K-12 Open: Anyone from Kindergarten to 12th grade may enter this section. The players tend to be stronger than the average K-5 player, their rating is usually over 1000 (though not required), and they tend to be in 6th through 12th grades.

Players may choose any section for which they qualify.  Some players may choose to "play up" to more challenging competition.
